Article পদাশ্রিত নির্দেশক

Definition: An article, technically an adjective, is a word used to modify a noun, which
is a person, place, object, or idea. A, An এবং The কে ইংরেজিতে article বলে। বর্তমানে আধুনিক
ইংরেজি গ্রামার–এ এদের determiner বলা হয়।

Classification: Article দুই প্রকার। যথা i) Definite article – The

ii) Indefinite article – A ও An.

(i) Definite article: যে article নির্দিষ্ট কোনো ব্যক্তি, বস্তু বা প্রাণীকে নির্দেশ করে, তাকে definite article বলে।

যেমন: The mobile is on the table. The man who came first is a doctor.

(ii) Indefinite article: যে article বিশেষ কোনো ব্যক্তি, বস্তু বা প্রাণীকে নির্দিষ্টভাবে না বুঝিয়ে অনির্দিষ্ট ব্যক্তি,

বস্তু বা প্রাণীকে বোঝায়, তাকে indefinite article বলে। যেমন: A lion lives in a forest. I saw a bird sitting
on the wall.

Usage of Article A

[ART:01]	Use A when a singular noun is indefinite and the article is followed by a consonant sound. [কোন Singular Noun অনির্দিষ্ট এবং Consonant দিয়ে শুরু হলে ঐ Singular Noun এর পূর্বে A বসে।]	There is a dirt road at the north end of this town.
[ART:02]	Use A/AN when mentioning something for the first time. [Countable Singular Noun এর কথা প্রথমবার উল্লেখ করতে Indefinite Article A/AN ব্যবহার করা হয়।]	Look! There's a dog in our yard!
[ART:03]	Use A for single letters and numbers that begin with a consonant sound. [সংখ্যা বা অক্ষর Consonant Sound দিয়ে শুরু হলে A ব্যবহৃত হয়।]	John got a "B" on his history test. The professor wrote a "2" on the board.
[ART:04]	Use A/AN to mean "for each" or "per". ["প্রতি" বা "প্রত্যেক" অর্থে A/AN ব্যবহার করা যায়।]	Eggs are only 79 cents a dozen. A plane travels over 600 miles an hour.
[ART:05]	Use A/AN before a noun phrase when using the comparative degree. [তুলনা করার ক্ষেত্রে Noun Phrase এর পূর্বে A/AN ব্যবহৃত হয়।]	Margaret is a better student than her sister. John is an older man than my dad.
[ART:06]	Use A with the words "few" or "little" when they express a positive meaning and also refer to something negative but are used with the words only or just. [A ব্যবহার করা হয় যদি 'few' বা 'little' শব্দগুলি ইতিবাচক হয় আবার নেতিবাচক কিছু উল্লেখ করলেও তার সাথে যদি 'only' বা 'just' শব্দগুলি থাকে তাহলেও A ব্যবহৃত হয়।]	He knows the subject because he has taken a few classes in it.
[ART:07]	Use A/AN after "there is" when referring to a countable noun. ["There is" -এর পরে Countable Noun থাকলে A/AN ব্যবহৃত হয়।]	There is a pen on the table.
[ART:08]	Use A before words such as "university" which sound like they start with a consonant even if the first letter is a vowel. Remember, it is the sound not the spelling which is important. [ব্যতিক্রমঃ ‘U’, ‘Eu’ কিংবা ‘Ew’ -র উচ্চারণ যদি ‘ইউ’ এবং 'O' যদি 'ওয়া' মত উচ্চারিত হয় তবে a ব্যবহৃত হয়।]	For example: "1" is spelled O-N-E; however, it is pronounced "won" like it starts with a "W". Example: She has a euro. Sounds like "yu-ro".
[ART:09]	কোনো তুলনা করা হলে যার সঙ্গে তুলনা করা হয়, তার আগে a/an বসে।	He is a Nelson Mendela. You are a Nazrul I see!
[ART:10]	কখনো কখনো preposition অর্থে a ব্যবহূত হয়। তখন সেই a কে Disguised Preposition বলে।	I went a (on) hunting.
[ART:11]	কোনো তুলনা বোঝাতে Abstract Noun যখন Common Noun হিসেবে ব্যবহূত হয় তখন, এদের আগে a/an বসে।	She is a beauty.
[ART:12]	Exclamation বোঝাতে what এর পর a/an বসে।	What a nice bird! What an awful remark!
[ART:13]	সংক্ষিপ্ত শব্দ বা শব্দের প্রথম অক্ষরটির উচ্চারণ শুরুতে vowel-এর মতো হলে তাদের আগে an বসে কিন্তু অক্ষরটির উচ্চারণ শুরুতে consonant-এর মতো হলে তাদের আগে a বসে।	He is an MA.
[ART:14]	Many এবং such এর পরে singular common noun ব্যবহূত হলে তার আগে a/an বসে।	Many a man was present in the meeting. I have not seen such a long queue!
[ART:15]	কতগুলো Phrase যেমন a few, a little, a good many, a lot of, a great many, a good deal –এর আগে স্বাভাবিক গঠনগতভাবেই a/an বসে।	I have a headache. He had a bad cold. I am in a hurry.
[ART:16]	Uncountable noun-এর সঙ্গে measure words যোগ করা হলে তাদের আগে a/an বসে।	Give me a glass of water, please.

Uses of An

[ART:19]	Use AN even if a singular noun begins with consonant but is omitted while pronouncing. [যদিও একটি Singular Noun Consonant দিয়ে শুরু হয় তবে উচ্চারণের সময় তা উচ্চারিত না হয়ে Vowel Sound উচ্চারিত হয় তাহলে AN ব্যবহৃত হয়।]	He is an honourable man.

[ART:22]	Use THE when the noun that follows is already known. [আগেই জানা আছে এমন কোনও নির্দিষ্ট Noun সম্পর্কে বলতে হলে সেই Noun এর আগে THE দরকার।]	I picked up my suitcase and the handle broke off.
[ART:23]	Use THE when the noun is made definite by a prepositional phrase. [Noun -কে যদি 'Prepositional Phrase' দ্বারা নির্দিষ্ট করা হয় তাহলে THE বসে।]	The prerequisites for this class are Algebra and Chemistry.
[ART:24]	Use THE when the noun is made definite by an adjective clause or an adjective phrase.	The man that hired me yesterday left the company today.
[ART:25]	Use THE with the superlative. [সর্বাপেক্ষা ভালো, খারাপ, সুন্দর ইত্যাদি বোঝাতে যেসব Adjective [বিশেষণ] ব্যবহার করা হয় [Superlative Degree] তাদের আগে THE বসে।]	Alaska is the biggest state in the United States of America.
[ART:26]	Use THE with ordinal numbers (ক্রমিক সংখ্যা) and other ranking words like "next" and "last."	The second semester begins in January.
[ART:27]	Use THE with the names of rivers, oceans, seas, and deserts.	The Padma is a big river.
[ART:28]	Use THE with plural nouns.	The Rocky Mountains are in the western part of the United States.
[ART:29]	Use THE with family names followed by a noun or pluralized. [কোনও পরিবার/ বংশকে সামগ্রিকভাবে বোঝাতে পারিবারিক নাম বা পদবির আগে THE বসে।]	The Rodriguezes bought a house on Cherry Lane.

[ART:44]	Use THE in the names of countries that contain the words united, union, kingdom, or republic.	The United Arab Emirates is a country in the Middle East.
[ART:45]	Use THE when the name of a language or religion is used as an adjective followed by a noun. [ভাষা বা ধর্মের নাম যদি Adjective হিসেবে ব্যবহৃত হয় তবে THE বসে।]	The English language has words from many other languages.
[ART:46]	Use THE with flu, measles, mumps, and chicken pox.	The measles is a childhood disease.
[ART:47]	পৃথিবীতে একটিই আছে, এমন জিনিসের নামের আগে The বসে।	The moon, The sun, The earth

Omission of Articles
