The Statue of Liberty, originally called Liberty Enlightening the World,
is a statue of Liberty Island in the harbour [সৈকত] of New York. It symbolises [প্রতীক] liberty in the form of a woman wearing flowing [বহমান] robes and a spiked [তীক্ষ্ণ অগ্রভাগ] crown [মুকুট]. She holds a torch aloft [ঊর্ধ্বে] in her right hand and carries in her left
hand a book inscribed [লিখিত] “July 4, 1776”. Broken chains,
symbolizing the overthrow [উৎখাত] of tyranny [অত্যাচার], lie at her feet. The statue was designed
by the French sculptor Frederic Bartholdi and was given by France to the USA to
commemorate [স্মরণ] the centennial [শতবার্ষিকী] of US independence in 1876. France raised
funds, by popular subscription to pay for the statue; US donors financed the
pedestal and installation of the monument. President Grover Cleveland dedicated
[সমর্পিত] the work on October 28, 1886. The statue,
the island, and nearby Ellis Island were declared a national monument in 1924.
The statue formed of copper sheets riveted [আটকে রাখা] to an iron framework, is one of the largest in the world. It measures
93.5 m from the bottom of the pedestal to the tip of the torch. Its head is reachable by staircase or
emergency lift. The statue weighs 250 tons. Originally conceived [ধারণা করা] as a gesture [ইঙ্গিত] of international friendship, the statue
has become a global symbol [প্রতীক] of freedom, marking the arrival of
millions of immigrants [অভিবাসী] to the United States.
