Mother Teresa, the mother as well as the servant of humanity, was born
in Yugoslavia on August 27, 1910. Her original name was Agnes Gonxha Bojaxhiu.
At the age of twelve, she realised [উপলব্ধি] that what she wanted to do most of all, was to help the poor. She
decided to train for missionary work and joined the Sisters of Loretto with a
mission in Kolkata. In 1928 she took her initial [প্রাথমিক] vows [প্রতিজ্ঞা] as a nun [মঠবাসিনী]. She taught at St. Mary’s High School in
Kolkata from 1929 to 1948. The suffering [কষ্ট] and poverty [দারিদ্র্য] she glimpsed [আভাস] outside the convent walls disturbed her. She left the convent school
and devoted [নিযুক্ত] herself to work among the poor in the slums
[বস্তি] of Kolkata. Soon she was joined by many voluntary [স্বেচ্ছা] helpers. This made it possible for her to
start ‘The Missionaries of Charity’ for the dying destitute [নিঃস্ব]. She persuaded [সাধাসাধি] the people that leprosy is not contagious
[ছোঁয়াচে]. She founded ‘Nirmol Hridoy’, ‘Mahatma
Gandhi Leprosy Ashram’ and many other organizations. Mother Teresa was awarded
the Padma Shri and Bharat Ratna. Mother Teresa was awarded the Nobel Prize in
the year 1979. She passed away in 1997. Though she is no more, she has left a
message behind: ‘Faith [বিশ্বাস] and compassion [দয়া] can heal [আরোগ্য করা] the world’. She will always be remembered
by the world for her selfless service to the poor and the sick.
